shephelah

October 5, 2015
Not my hand but I thought it was appropriate to share because our teacher said we might want to to this. On the hand are the 5 fortress cities in the Shephelah (low hills of Judea) and on the fingers are the five valleys. We went to all of them today!

The most amazing thing was that did what I would call a science experiment. Back in the days when Israel was getting attacked by the Babylonians, they used signal fires to communicate if their city had been captured or not. We didn't start a fire, but we did use two full size mirrors (yes we brought them on our field trip to the great outdoors) and used the light from the sun to reflect. And guess what! We could see each other's signals from about 20 miles away. Who knew you could do such a thing!

In the Elah valley is where the battle of David and Goliath happened. Oftentimes we get to participate in authentic activities but this was felt so legit. We got to take stones from the river bed where David would have gotten his stones and then we got to try our hand at using slings. The whole story just came to life as we were in this valley and reenacted the story. With one minor difference, we didn't hit a giant haha! But we did talk about defeating our own Goliaths and about relying on the Lord and how David was prepared! He might have been young, but he was skilled at what he did!

Mareshah was more of a developed city as in there was more for us to see. One of those things was this olive press that was underground. They are underground because if the olive oil is made in the sun it turns bitter and can't be used for cooking. We got a brief explanation of how it all work for preparation for when we would press our own olives later!

 These are pigeon caves!

and ancient tombs

These are the Bell Caves. They were created by the mining of limestone used for chalk plaster during the Byzantine period.

Whenever we get in places like these that have good acoustics we love to sing hymns!

We wrote a rap today as we traveled from place to place. Jezz hurt her ankle and we did a lot of walking today so we kind of did it to keep her mind off of it. It was super fun though to throw down some rhymes!
