a time to be of one heart

July 26, 2015
This was my last Provo week so it was a little bittersweet. We seriously had the best kids though! It was my first week with olders and it was quite shocking how much more these kids bonded. I love both youngers and olders though. Except I feel like I totally have come down to a teenage mind level. Even their jokes and the random things they do are starting to be really funny.

MC Wheels
Brother and Sister Hall changed my life. I am so grateful for their examples and for their testimonies. They live life to the fullest and don't let trials stop them from finding happiness. Their lives are centered on the gospel of Jesus Christ and that is all they need.

This week was the BEST EFY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD EVER!!!

Their favorite game this week was bunny bunny! i was terrified every time we played it but it was so much fun! Their intensity and excitement made this week one of the best!

Thank heavens for best friends who come at 11pm during night watch and bring you food when you're starving! So grateful for them and for our reunion! We hadn't been together in over two years!
love them!

This is me and Daniel. Don't mind our saturday morning sleepy faces. It had been a long week ha! But I always forget to take a picture with my co so i had to make sure this one happened! Daniel was so patient and kind. He is one of those awesome people that is quiet but can also be such a presence. I was so grateful for his spiritual leadership.

Seriously in love with this job! It just keeps getting better! And more tiring ha! This week was full of LAUGHTER. Actually every week is ha! I just love these cute kids and meeting so many amazing youth each week.My co this week, Devin, had surgery on his ACL about a month ago and in order to protect it from getting injured again he walked around with one crutch. Just one haha! It looked kinda funny, but it was SO helpful! The kids always knew where to find us. Gotta do whatcha gotta do.

So I was still getting over my cold and one day was just really rough. I didn't know this but Devin had told his boys that morning to be especially nice to me that day. One of our company goals was to give compliments to everyone every day. So throughout the day those boys really took that to heart. Whenever we walked anywhere they would yell "Mary, I love your hair" "Mary, i love your shoes" "Mary, I love your dress" "Mary, I love your backpack" "Mary, I love your eyes" "Mary, I love your ring" On and on they went. Other counselors would look at me and be like, wow they really love you! Ha! It did make me feel so loved!

when the boys leave the dance early, the girls party #tswiftlovin

this kid...ya never know what's coming next

Devin was gone a lot for duties and such. I realized how much efy is good marriage prep. aaaaand how much I never want to be a single mother. Granted, I'm never going to have 20 kids. But still! It was rough. I went up to Devin when he was on lunch duty one day and I said,
I'm so tired of being a single mom!
He said,
Sorry hun, I gotta make the money
What a jokester.

PIZZA NIGHT!
These girls went CRAZy!!! By far the most exciting pizza night I've had. They were dancing so wild and singing at the top of their lungs. I was highly entertained ha!

These kids LOVED being in the front! #earlytoeverything

This was right before the friday morningside on dating. We were cracking up! It really wasn't that funny but I think we were just tired and loved being around each other. It was great! These kids are gonna do great things. Sometimes I was really impressed by their maturity even if they were only 14 or 15 years old.

My awesome friend/mission companion Kjersten wrote an article about EFY for BYU's newspaper the Daily Universe and interviewed ME! Check it out!

new adventures

BIG NEWS:

I'm going to Jerusalem in the fall!!!

Basically it's perfect. I've never done anything like this ever before. But if there was anything crazy and spur the moment to do, this would be it. It all happened so quickly, but I turned in my application and it all just kind of worked out. #feelingblessed

becaaauuuse...

Isn't that video great?
go to all those places. check.

So I'm pretty much stoked.

It's the perfect mix of history (my favorite), the gospel (my favorite), and lots of music at the center (my other favorite). It's just right up my alley and I couldn't be more thrilled.

Countdown: 44 days

win the race

This week was absolutely fantastic! It was my first real week as an efy counselor and I absolutely LOVED it. It was just so fun to have my own group and to actually do the real thing!

So my co's name was Dave and we had so much in common! Both from Washington, both go to BYU, both served in the south, and both love efy. Needless to say, we worked so well together and had a blast doing it.

Unfortunately, the thursday before, I started to get a sore throat and was losing my voice. Saturday it was completely gone. Sunday night I wake up in the middle of the night with a fever and couldn't sleep. It was rough. So monday I just tried to make it through and even though it got better throughout the week, it was still not fun to be sick and working every day. But I gained a stronger testimony about the enabling power of the atonement. There is NO WAY I could've made it through this week without His help. He gave me energy, and help, beyond my own strength.

This year is the 40th year of EFY. How cool is that?! So normally the company names are chosen by the counselors from the standard work that the youth will be studying in seminary the upcoming year but this year all the company names come from the themes of the past 40 years.

This week we were

Dave literally has every single EFY song since the beginning of time so it was fun to listen to the theme song throughout the week.

Out of the 4 stadium of fires I've been to, this one was probably my favorite. Not even kidding. I just absolutely loved the whole thing! And it's so fun to be there with family!

It was seriously BEYOND fun to have Kenz here! I missed her!

Diet Coke and Mentos experiment! There were SOOO many bottles!

This is probably the one and only rock concert I'll ever attend but it was seriously so fun "rockin" out! And I was actually surprised how many of the words I actually knew to their songs! It was awesome!

the whole fam bam!

habits for life

The very next week I had to leave EFY and do Habits for Life.
This is also an incredible camp that I'm so happy to be a part of!
I've always loved improving myself and getting tips and tricks for how to be successful.

This camp is based on Sean Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. It is AMAZING. I remember reading it in school when I was in 7th grade and I loved it! It's been fun to get a refresher and to help some youth to start developing the habits in their lives as well!
This is my co-counselor, Jake. He's pretty great. He was like a little brother to me and
is leaving on a mission to Japan soon!

These are our cute kids! Shade was definitely necessary this week

sometimes ya just gotta take a #selfie

On Wednesday afternoon we took a hike up Rock Canyon. This has been one of my favorite places ever since I went rock climbing there, but I had never done any hiking so it was fun to go on a new adventure! At each bridge (there were 5) we stopped for a minute and Jake and I took turns sharing quotes and discussing with the kids how they applied to the seven habits. It was so cool!

The view at the top was incredible!

We made it!!! What a challenge! Probably not the most difficult hike I've ever done in my life but in that 100 degree heat and with 14 year old boys saying, "Mary, Mary, can we go faster??" I pretty much wanted to die. They sure gave me a run for my money!

There was a group that made it to the top and then there was a group
that just took their time and enjoyed the scenery.
Aren't they adorable??
I am such a sucker for beautiful sunsets and pictures that don't require any filtering.

Yay for classes!

the boys

the girls

Though the schedule is similar to that of EFY the curriculum is completely different. It was interesting to make that switch of not talking about the gospel at all. Because although most of the kids who come are LDS, a few are not. This because a great missionary opportunity and such a fun experience for someone of another faith to come to BYU and interact with so many kids who have high standards and know how to have fun in wholesome ways. We spent a lot of time bonding, building relationships, learning about how to better ourselves and then connect with others, and strengthen leadership skills. I'm so excited for this camp to keep growing and to keep changing lives!

One of the coolest parts of the week for me was when we did an activity called Person of Impact. Each of the youth thought about someone who had really impacted their lives and inspired them to be a better person. Right before this activity, my good friend Hank Smith had come to speak to us. As he was talking, he told us about how much the 7 habits had changed his life and had helped his relationship with his dad to become stronger. I didn't know any of this before and how much the habits meant to him, but then I realized how everything he taught me made sense. When I met Brother Smith 4 years, he completely changed my college experience. He was my book of mormon and new testament teacher and I absolutely LOVED going to class every day. Now, it's not that hard when you love to learn, you love your teacher, and you love the gospel. But he is one of those teachers that really just makes the scriptures come to life. he didn't just teach us scripture stories and the doctrine, he taught us how to apply what we were learning into our lives. My freshman year of college was definitely one that I changed a lot. I was figuring out who I was, the choices I wanted to make, and was learning to live away from home. Never did the gospel mean so much to me until then. Brother Smith and I got pretty close and eventually I wasn't just a student in his class, but he became one of my mentors, a person of impact. But until this night at habits camp, I didn't realize that every conversation we had, everything he asked me to do to help me accomplish my goals came from the 7 habits. He used it all in a spiritual sense and that was when I realized how closely the habits fit in with the gospel. The thing is, truth is truth, and when we learn true principles, they were benefit our lives regardless of the source. I was amazed to learn that as we implement the seven habits into our lives, we will not only be better people, we will become more like our Savior, and we will have stronger, better relationships with those around us.

Go find the book and read it! Then pick a habit and start working on it!
It will change your life!
