especially for youth

June 27, 2015
I feel like my life is just becoming one dream come true after another. I have wanted to be an EFY counselor for a very long time. As with most things that happen in my life, I feel like I should be the poster child fro them because I am so passionate about them. My 4 years as a participant at EFY were pure bliss. I just ate it all up. The classes, my counselors, my companies, the session directors, the dances, the cheers, the games, participating in the variety show and the music program. I LOVED it. And because of the experience I had, it motivated me to be a counselor and give other youth the opportunity to have a similar experience that I did. The opportunity to strengthen their testimonies, to feel the spirit, to get answers, to have fun, and to make friendships.

It's amazing what the gospel can do when you truly live it and embrace it each and every day surrounded by others who are doing the same. Now that's not gonna be how it is our whole lives, but EFY gives us a chance to set some good habits and to see what life can be like when we do those good things and hopefully gives us the strength to continue to do them even after we return home.

My very first week was a shadow week which means I really did nothing.  Basically we just got paid to be a participant with a polo and a name tag and strictly observe our mentor counselor. Hence, a "shadow". Since I kind of am obsessed with EFY, I didn't feel like I learned that much about the structure of the week or the teaching or how to be a good counselor, but it was helpful to get some tips about some management things and more of the administrative type things that you don't see as a participant. A lot of behind the scenes things. But overall, it was a great week and it got me really excited for the rest of the summer!

Scripture: Jeremiah 24:7

We had the youngers and it's so funny to watch them interact and just the things that they come up with. I felt like they were pretty mature spiritually but that's about it ha! And then there's always those kids that just act like they're too cool to be there and you think they're getting absolutely nothing out of it and then on thursday night they bare their testimony and then you're like, "wow, they were actually paying attention and got something out of it!" They call Thursday "pay day" for the counselors because you get to see the fruits of your labors.

I'm excited for the rest of the summer and most definitely
for having my own group and being able to teach!

Something else I learned this week:

I was NOT made for this weather. Seriously dying walking all over campus.
*crossing fingers I get used to it*

it's june

June 7, 2015
I decided to start June off with a bang! It was one of my busiest weeks yet! But I love to be busy. Not like you really need all the details but I think this week deserves to be journaled at least for my own benefit.

monday:
I honestly don't remember what I did in the morning. Sometimes monday mornings are just rough haha! But I went to choir, grabbed something to eat, and then met with my group for my class to do a presentation. We played jeopardy with our class to review the information and it was so fun! That class is such a crack up! There are so many diverse personalities and sometimes people just play off of each other and there's just a lot of joking and laughing. after class, I went to the HFAC for rehearsal and then headed up to Salt Lake to see MY DAD! On my way home there was a beautiful sunset! It's kind of a bummer that sometimes pictures just don't do it justice.

Dad was at Matt and Mikelle's so we got to hang out with them for a little bit. I just love those cute kids so much!
When we got to Salt Lake, Dad showed me around the hotel. It was gorgeous! I loved it! They had a fresh flower arrangement in the lobby and the grounds are lovely and there was a fountain and his room was so nice too! There were like 20 floors in the hotel! We each had our own beds and I just really like the pillows haha! We stayed up pretty late but it was fun to talk to him and just be with him after not seeing him for 6 months!

tuesday:
Dad and I woke up and decided to go the temple. We missed the 10:00 session so we walked around temple square for a while and took some pictures. I absolutely love that temple. It was a beautiful morning!

Afterwards, I raced back to Provo to go to class. Right after class I had lunch with KJ! It was so good to see her. I've literally only seen her like 3 or 4 times since she's been home which is just not enough! I am so jealous of all the traveling she gets to do! And then, after lunch, Keza and I went to go see the longest ride. Keza's family is moving back to Washington this weekend. Yay! So we wanted to get together before she went to go help them. I was a little bit disappointed because the movie was kind of different than the book but it's still a good love story nonetheless. I then rushed back to campus for rehearsal. Are you catching a trend here? I was literally running from one place to another today haha! Rehearsal was good! I'm definitely starting to get the hang of this music. And then I came back for staff meeting. We went over check-outs. What in the world. How is the term already over?? I then treated myself to some ice cream and went.to.bed.

wednesday:
This was a big day because one of my classes was ending! So I had to finish my final project for that. So I worked on it all morning, went to one of my other classes, finished working on it, met with my group, and then had our last class. Our final project was to create centers based on a certain curriculum and have them be self-directed. So our teacher brought in her kids and had them rotate through the centers and do the activities. It was so fun! Annnd we got out of class early which is always a bonus! Yay for that class being done forever! I took a short nap and then worked. On Wednesday nights, Xavier and I put on activities for our residents. This week we had a s'more fest. It was so fun and the perfect night to do it! fire, music, s'mores, socializing, and good weather. What more could you ask for?

thursday:
The nice thing about not having class until 2 is that I get to sleep in on the days after I work. So by the time I got ready, it was time to go get lunch with my friend Kia. We went to the MOA Cafe and they have the best food there! It's definitely one of my favorite spots. Kia got engaged this week and I loved hearing all about it. Her and Allen are seriously one of my favorite couples! After lunch, I went to choir and then I went back up to Salt Lake to hang out with Dad one more time. We just walked around City Creek for a couple hours and we went to Temple Square and made a video to send to Jacob. It has been absolutely gorgeous outside all week and it was really fun to spend that extra time with him. Family is the best! I then came back and had opera rehearsal!

friday:
I honestly didn't do much today. Philip facetimed me in the morning and then I went to choir at 2 and then I wasted time for 2 hours and almost fell asleep. but I did read a chapter in 7 habits. Then I talked to my mom for a while and then I took a short nap. Clearly, naps are my best friend haha! Then I grabbed something to eat and went to rehearsal. It was our first tech rehearsal so we went through the whole show in the pit. It was so fun! I absolutely love being in this show!
not the best photo quality. i'm going to try to take another one when the lights are on

Then I came back and worked all night. It's usually pretty quiet around here. But at midnight a few of my girls came into the lobby and I got to talk to them for a quite a while and catch up on their lives. It was super fun! They crack me up and I'm so glad they've gotten to be such good friends! They made the time pass a lot more quickly than it would've if I was just there by myself!

saturday:
Because I don't get done with work until 1:30 on friday nights I usually like to sleep in but that wasn't exactly an option today because I had rehearsal in the morning. Off to HFAC I went and played my violin for four hours. Can you believe it? I don't think I've ever played my violin that long in my entire life. It was super fun though minus the exhaustion. My arm felt like it was going to fall off afterwards! And now the music has been stuck in my head ever since. We did have a break though and our conductor bought us pizza! Woo-hoo! Also, we have GET to wear pit black, not concert black which means that every night next week I get to wear a black t-shirt and yoga pants. It is so comfy! After rehearsal, I took a quick nap, showered, and then braved the storm. Literally. Apparently it was in the forecast but after the rest of the day that was completely warm and sunny it was a little bit of a shock. Thunder. Lightning. Raindrops the size of golf balls. Flooding. There was absolutely no way of staying dry even with a hood or umbrella. But it was kinda fun. It really just made me want to go play in it haha! I made it back to the HFAC where Greta and I saw the world premiere of the Princess Academy. I read the book ages ago so it was so fun to be reminded of the story. It was so fun! I have been so blessed this year to go to some many arts events. I absolutely love admiring the creativity and passion that goes into these things! We finished the night by going to in n' out with an elder from my mission. It was so fun to catch up with him! We basically spent the whole time reminiscing about the mission and laughing a lot!

sunday:
church. renewal. naps out in the sun.

Summer is here! If not only because of the warm, sunny weather, but also the abundance of efy kids, and the fact that I got bitten by two different kinds of bugs this week. So excited for what the next few months have in store!
