book review: a wrinkle in time

April 9, 2019

A Wrinkle in Time is the story of Meg Murry, a high-school-aged girl who is transported on an adventure through time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin O'Keefe to rescue her father, a gifted scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet.

So I actually saw the movie when it came out on Netflix and was like, what is this story?? It's SOOOO weird! Anyways, I'm just really into reading those books that have always been super popular or meaningful either by being classics or being read in school. So obviously I had to read it to say that I had.

I still think the story and idea is super weird. But I'm also not a lover of utopia/sci-fi books. However, I thought there were some great messages in the story. In our book club discussion, the girls were surprised that it had been read in schools because there is talk of the bible and other religious ideas. But the overall message of love is the answer to everything and good will conquer evil was memorable walking away from the book.

The characters are not lovable characters though! There is not a lot of character development. The author just jumps right in without explaining a lot or giving a lot of background. So I didn't grow any great attachment to any of the characters.

I'm glad I read it, but it's not one of my all-time fav books. Which is fine! I think it's important to read books from a variety of genres and time periods to really make you appreciate the books you do love!
