book review: the power to become

January 8, 2019

As followers of Christ, our desire is to become like Him. In fact, we have been commanded to do so. But how?

In Power to Become, Elder David A. Bednar explores how the Savior makes possible His divine commission, "Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect" (3 Nephi 12:48).

Chapters in this thought-provoking book highlight the importance of the Atonement, the spiritual gift of personal peace, the importance of priesthood ordinances, and the responsibility owe have to obey willingly and endure valiantly.

"As we increase in learning about the Savior and His gospel, Elder Bednar writes, "as we strive with ever greater consistency to act in His doctrine, ordinances, and covenants, then we are blessed with power through His Atonement to increasingly become like Him." Power to Become introduces vital tools we all can use to invite these eternally significant blessings into our lives.

This was the perfect book to read at the beginning of the year! Right when everyone is making resolutions and reflecting on the past year and what they can do better. At our book club discussion, we were talking about how there wasn't a ton of new information in the book but how the whole book was filled with little reminders that we so often need.

Something that really stuck out to me was about OBEDIENCE. He talked about how it's one thing to perform the outward actions of obedience and obey the institution, public, and shared commandments, but a greater thing to respond to the individual, private, and personally revealed commandments. I have definitely seen this in my own life when I have been increasingly righteous and the Lord has revealed personal things for me to do even better so that I can become something greater.

I also loved the reminder that the Holy Ghost is the true teacher and that our responsibility as teachers of the gospel is to preach by the spirit and then the responsibility falls on the students to let the spirit enter their hearts and act on their learning.

Elder Bednar has two other books that he wrote before this one, Increase in Learning and Act in Doctrine. I am looking forward to reading the other two and putting all of insight into practice in my own life!

conference//birthday

November 10, 2018
It has become a sort of tradition the last few years for my parents to come down for both conferences and I absolutely love it! April is always right around spring break and Bryan's birthday which is awesome and October is right around or on my birthday!

It is always so nice to take a weekend just to spend with family and of course hear all the uplifting messages from conference.

I fully believe in celebrating birthdays all month long and mine started a week before my birthday at DISNEYLAND. I proudly wore my happy birthday pin every. single. day. we were there and fully embraced all the kind words from cast members and visitors alike. Plus, the extra birthday treats at restaurants were the icing on the cake (literally).

My husband bought me my first ever DSLR camera and I AM IN LOVE! I still have so much to learn but I loved having it for this family vacation. It makes night and day difference with the quality of your photos! He's still trying to convince me that he's not trying to "top" each birthday because last year he started off with a pretty big birthday present, a ring. You can read all about that here.

Then, on my actual birthday we went out to dinner and I got spoiled by Bryan's family! And Kenzie got to come!! I was thrilled.

The rest of the weekend we got to play with the rest of my family. It was the best!

I feel like I've been hiding under a rock. I've heard about Nielsen's Custard so many times but never been up to try it! I thought it was fantastic! We had almond and cherry with the vanilla base and it was delicious!

This was at the historic first women's conference on the saturday of conference and I felt so blessed to be there! The talks were amazing. You can read, listen, or watch them here.

Utah Valley Fires

September 21, 2018
The past month or so have been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Back in August, the Coal Hollow fire started because a tree was hit by lightning. It was close t o home but not so close that it directly affected people we knew. Mostly, it was a major inconvenience because our entire house smelled like smoke and we had to either escape Spanish Fork or hide out in our basements. A couple weeks later, it went away.

In September, a fire that they decided to let just burn, drastically took a turn for the worse when a long period of dry weather and high winds caused this fire to spread exponentially. What was just a little bit of smoke turned into extremely hazy, grey skies and billows of smoke coming over the tops of the mountains. One day while I was driving home from work, I was shocked and how scary those mountains looked. It seemed as if the fire was RIGHT THERE. I texted Bryan and asked if we were safe. His reply was, “actually no, I was just informed that we are in pre-evacuation.”

A million thoughts started running through my head. How close is this fire? Where will we go? Will we still have school? What are you supposed to bring? How much time will we have to leave?

After talking through it and looking at maps of where the fire was, we decided that it probably would not come all the way through the canyon to us, but that it is better to be prepared. I gathered important documents, some clothes, our wedding pictures, stuff from missions and Jerusalem, and my violin, packed them all up, and put them by the door. There they stayed for two weeks.

We were safe. But all around us, our world was being turned upside down. There were two fires that were merging into one. People in Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills, cities close by, were evacuated. Members of the Covered Bridge branch that meet in our church building were evacuated. Suddenly we were in the middle of a situation where people needed places to stay, basic necessities, and food to eat.

I read a facebook post of a girl who went to help her parents evacuate. She gave permission in the post to share, so I am going to because it wasn't until I read this that the whole thing really hit me.

"A fire is coming. You’re being evacuated. You only have 20 minutes to grab whatever you can. …What do you take?
It is 4:51 a.m. and I’m still awake. I can’t sleep. I can smell the smoke and the ash in the air, but maybe it’s because I just went outside to get something out of the car. I can smell the fire burning.
Only 15 hours ago I received a text telling me to prepare to evacuate my home at any time. By 5:00 p.m. (three hours later) we were ordered to evacuate our homes as quickly as possible. So, the question still stands… what do you take?
The entire time I was driving home to help my family evacuate I kept asking myself that same question. To my surprise, I could only think of a few things. They were items that, although seemingly pointless to others, were treasures to us. Items we could not replace. We didn’t haul out the flat screen TVs, we didn’t try to load up the couches. Instead, we grabbed the photo albums. We filled boxes and boxes with our albums. We took the wedding dresses. We removed precious paintings/photos from the wall.
And that’s it.
Because when you only have a few minutes to take everything… what do you take? What is most important?
Today I drove away from my home, perhaps seeing it as it is for the last time, with tears streaming down my face. I have always claimed to have grown up in the best place on earth. I consider my home to be a well-kept secret from most, as well as a sanctuary from the world. I drove away today, not just from a building I call my house – but an entire canyon I call my home. My heart is breaking knowing the fire might wipe it all out. However, no matter what happens I feel immensely blessed to have grown up in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
So, there’s a fire coming. You only have 20 minutes to evacuate. What do you take? What is most important?
Family.
The Gospel.
We already have it. When it comes right down to it, nothing else truly matters. How grateful I am that my family and I are safe and that we have the gospel in our lives. We may never see our home the same way again… but we also might. I believe in miracles. I believe in God. I believe He has a plan for us and He will guide us, as long as we listen.
Come what may, but we will pray. We will not stop praying. We will never stop praying. Prayer is one of the most powerful connections we have with God. So I beg you to pray with us. Pray for the firefighters. Pray for the winds to cease. Pray. Because with hundreds of prayers, we just might see a miracle.
And in the end, if we return to ashes, then we will rebuild. God is on our side.
But we will pray, and we will never stop praying.
Please pray.

I haven't lived here my whole life, but there are many who have. Many who have memories of girl's camp, hiking, camping, and canyon drives. People who can't imagine their lives without these mountains. It would be absolutely devastating if they were gone!

Smoke consumed our every day living, ash started falling from the sky, during the day the mountains that are basically in our backyard could not even be seen, and at night the sky was illuminated with flames, dangerously close to where all those people just left.

Our stake president called for a daily prayer at 7pm where everyone would stop wherever they were and say a prayer for safety and cooperating weather. The next Sunday the entire valley participated in a fast in hopes that our faith would be sufficient for a miracle.

And it wasn't even hours later that there was RAIN. It didn't last long, but there was rain!! It was the greatest manifestation of answers to prayer. The fires were long from being gone, but the most amazing thing was that not a single house or life was lost.

Firefighters and other EMS came from all over the state to help structure and fight the fires. Anywhere you went in Spanish Fork, you would see fire trucks of all different shapes, sizes, and colors.

Donations came in like crazy that they actually started turning people away. Can you imagine that?? There was an abundance of those who were willing to help.

We have so much gratitude for all those who contributed to helping keep us safe and aided those who were displaced from their homes.

Here is a link to photos of the fires and firefighters.

Since then, we have had a plethora of rain and it is so nice to see clear skies again! Throughout, those weeks, what stuck out to me the most, was that even amidst the darkest of circumstances, faith really can conquer all and that our Heavenly Father is mindful of us and does protect and care for us according to our faith. He answers prayers and all things are possible through Him!

taking a break from social media

June 25, 2018

Last summer, I took a MONTH long break from social media. I had some personal things going on and I just didn't need to see things from other people or be involved in it at all. I didn't set a concrete amount of time that I was going to take off, but I felt like after a month I had accomplished what I wanted to and had just kind of reset.

It was super eye-opening just to see how I mostly used social media as a time-filler and out of habit, rather than for purposeful enjoyment. Once I had logged out of everything and deleted apps from my phone and took bookmarks off my computer, I realized how much more free time I had to do things that I loved!

Granted, it was during the summer and it was the first summer I officially had off without school or work. It allowed me to really figure out what I like doing and set a schedule for myself so that I was still productive even though I didn't have much going on.

Instead of scrolling while sitting in the car or having any downtime, I would open the gospel library app or read books on overdrive. Instead of going through Instagram, Facebook, and Blogger (yes, all in that order) every morning, I just got started on my scripture study right away. I was taking President Nelson's challenge which you can read about here. I actually read real books I could hold in my hand and went outside more. I played the piano. I even left my phone at home sometimes if I went out. I felt more present with the people I was surrounded by and had more meaningful conversations.

I never considered myself addicted to my phone or to social media, but I loved see how much more I could do with my time by taking out such a simple thing. I honestly didn't really feel like I was missing out. If there was anything super important going on, someone would tell me about in person or through a text. So this led me to think about why I even use social media.

I love social media because of the connections I make, the memories I see from my friend's lives, learning about new products, and finding inspiration from anything to fashion, house decor, or spirituality, but as with all things in life we need balance. So, I came up with some guidelines for myself (some new and some I was already doing) and I think they will be helpful to you as well!

1. Set a specific time

I think we have all been guilty of checking social media channels unnecessarily throughout the day. I love doing it right before bed as a way to end my day so that I can start my day right off the bat without any distractions. Just once a day!

2. Delete apps from your phone or put them in a category

Sometimes we don't have the best self-control! One thing that has really helped me is putting my apps in a category that are not on the home page of my phone so they aren't as easily accessible. That way you have to work for it a little bit to check. Some socials, like Pinterest or Facebook can be accessed just as easy from a computer so you could even delete them from your phone and just solely check them from a laptop.

3. If you find yourself getting discouraged, take a break!

It's OK to take breaks from social media! Sometimes we do just need a reset even if it's only for a day. I also know that a lot of people struggle with self-comparison and can get depressed or discouraged when they see people's highlight reels. Yes, of course we all wish we were taking a that vacation in Greece or going to Disneyland one more time or had the perfect outfit and smile in every picture, but that's not reality! And if seeing that from other people is hard for you, then do yourself a favor and take a break so you don't have to see it! Then come back when you are feeling better mentally and emotionally.

If you are going to take a break, find some alternatives to scrolling. Do what you love to do and get so caught up in those things that you forget what everyone else is doing!

4. Re-evaluate the accounts you follow

Recently I realized that I was following so many companies, some that I had never even bought anything from. Because of the algorithm on Instagram, I wasn't even seeing what my friends and "real" people were even doing! So as much as I loved seeing every single sale that was going on, I just started unfollowing a TON of accounts so I didn't have to convince myself that I couldn't buy anything or that there would be another sale eventually! It was so easy and now I see things on my feed that are actually important to me.

Following people you actually know and care about can bring you a lot more joy and satisfaction that constantly living in a state of fake and perfect.

There are a lot of influencers on social media accounts and some of them are super awesome if you feel passionate about their content, but they can also give you a false sense of reality so just evaluate how you feel when you see their posts and if it's adding or detracting from your life.

5. Don't allow push notifications

This is something I've always done and I can't imagine doing it differently! I would feel so stressed if notifications were popping up on my phone all day! If you don't get notifications to your phone, you physically have to go into the app to see them. And if you're only checking once a day like I suggested in number 1, then you'll feel really popular with all the tags, likes, and comments you may have gotten during the day without even knowing!

I also like to keep my phone really neat and tidy, so I love not having little red numbers on my apps all the time!

During my social media break last year I also learned that you don't have to see EVERYTHING. It's ok if you miss that one post or if you don't get a chance to enter that giveaway or if your favorite shirt just went on sale and you missed it. Life really does go on and like I said, if it's really important, you'll find out eventually.

Let's use our technology as a resource to learn more and
help others instead of as a [distraction] and a toy!

I want to hear your thoughts and what has worked for you! Please share in the comments below!

WEDDING

May 30, 2018
I never pictured a winter wedding but I can't imagine waiting any longer than we did to get married! It was a perfect day besides the freezing cold weather!

We did the reception the night before (another thing I never pictured myself doing) but it was so nice to just leave after the luncheon and not have to worry about the rest of the evening!

Our reception was at the Salem Hills Community Center which is right on the pond. They had it all lit for Christmas and it was beautiful!

We had simple desserts and a hot chocolate bar.

I'm literally obsessed with my ring. He did so good!!

vanilla cake with a raspberry filling and buttercream frosting. it was delicious!

I was so nervous about cutting the cake even though we had practiced! The only mishap was me almost falling over trying to get away from Bryan smashing it in my face ha!

*not pictured* the boys on the floor because their hug was THAT big

"look at mary with our faces close together like when you were little"

it was kind of awkward driving away since we weren't married yet! so we just drove down the road to a gas station, waited for like 20 minutes and then went back to help clean up!

I was staying at Matt and Mikelle's with my family and we were STARVING so of course we stopped at in n' out on our way there.

We woke up the next morning and headed straight for the temple!

I had always wanted to get married in the Salt Lake Temple until the Payson Temple was built. It is absolutely gorgeous, especially the celestial room. Bryan's parents and sister had gotten married in the Salt Lake temple but he had also felt like Payson was where he wanted to get married too. So that was that! It was just kind of meant to be. And I drive by the Payson temple on my way to work every day so I love having that reminder of such a special day!

It was FREEZING! and little Troy just snuggled right up to me! It was so sweet!

We were sealed for time and all eternity. If you want to learn more, go here!

I am so grateful I get to be with Bryan FOREVER!

right after the luncheon, we finished packing up a few things and then headed up to Salt Lake for the night! It was such a special day!
