The Negatives

January 16, 2013
Last week was a little rough. I was definitely not mentally prepared to come back to school, but this week has been significantly better and I think it will be a great semester. Fun things are going to start happening and hopefully teachers will be able to get their classes under control and everyone will be on the same page. Now, my title for this post doesn't just have to do with the not so ideal week that I experienced, but also to the weather...

I have never been in weather this cold before and it's been kind of fun. But only kind of. The biggest difference between here and home is that at home, it could be 40 and chill you to the bone, but here it could be -5 and the cold just kind of washes over you, surface level I guess. There is so much snow everywhere and it never melts because it never gets any warmer! I think the highest it has gotten this week is 10 degrees. But today, it was snowing and a whopping 16 degrees! And it actually felt a little bit warm haha! I was emailing a friend earlier this week and he said, is it even allowed to be that cold? I don't think it is...

It's also been interesting to try and get dressed every morning. What do you wear when all you want to do is cuddle up in sweats and a blanket? It is school and I feel an obligation to look somewhat presentable/cute but I also don't want to wear the same jacket every day so it has been a dilemma to try and plan outfits.

But probably the coolest part about this weather is a phenomenon called diamond dust. Now I, am just an observer of nature. I love to look at the sky and enjoy the different kinds of weather and see how it affects the things around us and usually it just stays at that. Observing. However, Emily is also in love with weather conditions and she actually looks things up! So on Sunday while I was looking out the window at the beautiful sparkles that were coming from sky, Emily was figuring out what it was.

Diamond dust is a ground-level cloud composed of tiny ice crystals. It is most commonly observed in Antarctica, but it can occur anywhere with a temperature that is well below freezing.(aka Utah) It is similar to fog and is often associated with halos around the sun and other related optical phenomena. These result because the diamond dust crystals form directly as simple hexagonal ice crystals, as opposed to freezing drops.

So now that you know all about diamond dust, I hope you will get to see it for yourself one day but this picture does not do it justice whatsoever. It is beautiful and definitely seems like something that should be in a make-believe world, not real life.
look closely!
